I would say that I am more of a Digital Immigrant then a Digital Native.
I was not exposed much to computers growing up; however videos games are another story.
I did play video games since I was probably at the age of seven. It was not until
after high school and into college when I began to use computers frequently.
I got my first cell phone during my first year in college and my first digital camera just this past Christmas. Since
my exposure to computers I have learned a lot. I use the computer often at work
and at school so anything I have learned I have learned through experience at work and CIS classes that I have taken.
I feel I am somewhat of a Digital Native
in the sense that I was and am still a video game lover and I have picked up many things in the world of technology. “The “Digital Immigrant accent” can be seen in such things as turning
to the Internet for information second rather than first” (Prensky Part 1, 2) I consider myself a Digital Native because
I have learned that the quickest way to get an answer is to turn to the Internet first.
Although I have some Digital Immigrant tendencies when it comes to learning i.e. I prefer campus courses as to online courses,
I agree with Prensky that presentation of the material does depend on how one will accept it “It just depends on how
it is presented.”(Prensky Part 1, 5). I learned the 50 states in alphabetical
order in the 5th grade by singing a song and I still remember them today.
It may take me a little longer but it’s still in my memory.
I have used computers for various different reasons. I have used them for jobs with access only to the companies programs.
I have used them for games. I have used them to research information, write papers,
to learn more about computers, etc. The main benefit to me is all the information
I can get by just searching a word in Google. I find my main difficulties
that have ever been with computers were horrible connections. I dread using a
computer because I always end up with the slowest one or they do not have access to what I need. I do not have a computer at home and I am limited to computer access at work for only work. Because I have very limited computer access I will have to come to the computer labs at school, which can
be difficult for me at times. I plan to login to work on the course in the evening
every chance I may get.
